Tanker seized off Somalia 'heading north'

27/03/09, OSLO (AFP) — The Bow-Asir, a Norwegian chemical tanker captured by pirates off the Somali coast, is travelling north, the ship's owner Salhus Shipping said Friday, adding it had not yet received a ransom demand.

"From the satellite we can see that the vessel is heading in a northerly direction," the company said in a statement. The Bahamas-registered tanker, carrying a 20,000 tonne chemical cargo and a crew of 27, was hijacked Thursday by as many as 18 pirates around 250 nautical miles (460 kilometres) east of the southern Somali port of Kismayo.

Salhus Shipping said it so far had no indication that any of the crew, including 19 Philippinos, one Russian, a Lithuanian and the Norwegian captain, had been injured.

"We have not yet received a request for ransom," company chief Per Hansen told AFP.

The Bow-Asir was captured only a few hours after pirates seized the 9,000-tonne Greek-owned Nipayia with 19 crew members onboard some 450 nautical miles (830 kilometres) east of Kismay.
