Somalia: Report Exposes Wicked Acts of Countries Supporting UIC
22/11/06,
Scholars and senior government officials said the recent report released by UN experts on the situation of the arms embargo on Somalia has exposed the aims and wicked acts of those who assist the Union of Islamic Courts.
Speaking at a panel discussion organized by Radio Fana on the report the scholars and officials said it has clearly indicated the ambition of these countries to promote terrorism in east Africa and the whole world.
State Minister of Education Dr. Adhanom Haile said the report indicates that Eritrea, Libya and Egypt, which support the UIC, are not only intent in destabilizing Somalia but also Ethiopia.
He said the UIC with the financial, military training and arms support of those countries and in collaboration with Oromo Liberation Front (OLF) and Ogaden National Liberation Front (ONLF) has strengthened itself and declared Jihad on Ethiopia.
Dr.Adhanom further said that the speeches repeatedly made by the UIC leaders expose their objective of destabilizing Ethiopia.
A representative of the Ministry of Federal Affairs, Dr. Addis Gebre-Egziabher, said on his part he has learned from the report that the objectives of those countries that support the UIC does not solely target Somalia but also eastern Africa, and particularly Ethiopia.
Instructor of Law with the Ethiopian Civil Service College, Mohammed Abdullahi and Somali State Security and Justice Sector Head Abdi Mohammed, said on their parts that the report has proved Ethiopia's allegation that the forces which are marching to forcefully seize power in Somalia have the intention of promoting terrorism throughout Africa.
This has also enabled the world to understand Ethiopia's endeavour to prevent the expansion of terrorism in Africa.
Oromia Justice Bureau representative, Lemma Tesema, said the acts of both the UIC, which is striving to snatch the power of the transitional federal government that is recognized by the United Nations, African Union and the international community, and those who are providing support for it are violating the international law.
Lemma stressed that Ethiopia should closely watch expansionism and terrorism which are threats to the country and the whole world.
The scholars suggested that Ethiopia should also make the necessary precautions against those provocative forces operating in Somalia.
They also pointed out that African nations should loudly protest against the forces so that the whole world can recognize the plots to overthrow the Somali transitional government and launch attacks on Ethiopia.
The Ethiopian government should similarly bolster its efforts of carefully observing the developments and raise the awareness of the people on the matter and create national consensus.
Meanwhile, the leader of the Union of Islamic Courts (UIC) has revived the idea of a "Greater Somalia" that would incorporate regions in Kenya and Ethiopia - a move that could further stoke tensions with the neighbouring countries, the Associated Press reported.
UIC Chairman Sheik Hassan Dahir Aweys told Shabelle Radio late Friday that his group would work to unite ethnic Somali peoples, but he did not say how it proposed to achieve a "Greater Somalia."
This is the first time that Aweys has spoken about expanding UIC outside Somalia since his group seized control of the capital, Mogadishu, in June and then consolidated its control over most of southern Somalia, the news agency said.
"We will leave no stone unturned to integrate our Somali brothers in Kenya and Ethiopia and restore their freedom to live with their ancestors in Somalia," Sheik Aweys declared. Somalis live in Djibouti, northeastern Kenya and eastern Ethiopia.
To attain the same goal, Somalia invaded Ethiopia in 1977 to form the "Greater Somalia", but was quickly repelled.
